The European Bank for Reconstruction and Development (EBRD) was founded in 1991 to support the shift to market economies in Central and Eastern Europe after the Cold War. Headquartered in London, it promotes private-sector growth and entrepreneurship. It has invested almost €150 billion in more than 6,000 projects, and today it works in regions well beyond Europe.
Mongolia became an EBRD country of operations in 2006, and the Bank has a Resident Office in Ulaanbaatar. Since then, it has financed 172 projects totaling US$3.2 billion (€2.8 billion). Its investments now reach well beyond mining into the wider private sector. Its Advice for Small Businesses program has also supported nearly 1,000 Mongolian enterprises.
